From 1991 through 1996 I attended the Anma Institute and graduated from various courses in Anma 按摩 (Traditional Japanese Massage). This training would mark the beginning of my life’s work in the pursuit of authentic Anma training in Japan. The Anma Institute was originally setup by Takashi Nakamura, a Anma practitioner from the Kansai Shinkyu Tanki Daigaku 関西鍼灸短期大学 (School of Massage, Acupuncture and Moxibustion) in Osaka, Japan, to provide a local source of Anma therapists for the then only Japan sanctioned hot springs in the United States located in Japan Town San Francisco, California.
The first vision of The ANMA Institute is to see skilled touch recognized in our culture as a basic requirement for health and well-being. We believe in touch. We believe it is essential for developing and maintaining physical and psychosocial health. We believe touch is essential to healing, which in the original sense means “to make whole”. We also believe that the absence of positive touch, like the absence of food and water, results in people developing a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms.
There are nine major categories of techniques within the art of Anma. Seven are original and two were added later on: (Kyosatsu Ho and Haaku Ho). Also, the Kyokute Ho methods are only found within the Japanese tradition of Anma and not in any other art form. Each section allows you to work the body in a uniquely different way. These nine sections create various effects that assist in the achievement of the goals of Anma Therapy. During an Anma massage all nine areas are utilized which creates a very complete full body therapy.

By receiving Anma people lose their illness caused by sick blood and energy. If the body is weak and the blood circulation is poor, the result is illness. The person does not become ill if they constantly exercise their hands, feet, or body, and they consume good food and maintain the circulation of blood and fluids, in this manner they do not become ill.
