Jigo Tenshin-ryu Kenpo Menkyo Kaiden Maki 自剛天真流 拳法免許皆伝巻 – Recently I have acquired a very high level scroll for the Jigo Tenshin-ryu. It was issued by Kazuma Shindo 進藤一馬, the mayor of Fukuoka city, who was also the head of the Meidokan 明道館 at the time. This was a very famous domain dojo where various arts and sciences were taught and interacted with each other.
The contents of this particular scroll detail the secret principles of their style of Kumiuchi and the Kasatsu (killing and reviving) methods. This particular ryu-ha had an extensive system of Kenpo Sakatsu 拳法殺活 (striking killing methods) that were a closely guarded secret of the school. It is a blend of Atemi-waza and medical knowledge.

The Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu Irohakun 大東流合気柔術いろは訓 (The Precepts of the Fundamentals) is one of the first known booklets produced by Okuyama Sensei while he was still a student training under Matsuda Toshimi learning Daito-ryu. The recorded precepts in this manuscript use to be a closed secret passed only to students training. Okuyama authored this work in collaboration with Matsuda to make it more available.

In this special issue Hakko-ryu Goshindo 八光流護身道 magazine, Okuyama Sensei features both Shihan Junji Saito and my teacher Mike Depasquale Sr. There are articles and photos included that Saito Sensei sent to his cousin, the founder in Japan as a report of the teaching and training he was doing at the Yoshitsune Dojo and other locations he was teaching at in New York.

This issue’s medical focus is on if Koho Shiatsu can cure heart disease and prevent this illness from causing sudden death.

This is the first scroll one is awarded after being initiated into Shihan training. The founder of the school, Shodai Soke Okuyama, grew more and more as a pacifist as the years went on. Sometime in the 1970s he made the decision to remove many of the original, more dangerous techniques from his school’s curriculum. New Shihan in Hakko-ryu mostly receive the newer reproduced version of this scroll that has these techniques removed.
