From 1991 through 1996 I attended the Anma Institute and graduated from various courses in Anma 按摩 (Traditional Japanese Massage). This training would mark the beginning of my life’s work in the pursuit of authentic Anma training in Japan. The Anma Institute was originally setup by Takashi Nakamura, a Anma practitioner from the Kansai Shinkyu Tanki Daigaku 関西鍼灸短期大学 (School of Massage, Acupuncture and Moxibustion) in Osaka, Japan, to provide a local source of Anma therapists for the then only Japan sanctioned hot springs in the United States located in Japan Town San Francisco, California.

We also believe that the absence of positive touch, like the absence of food and water, results in people developing a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms.

There are nine major categories of techniques within the art of Anma. Seven are original and two were added later on: (Kyosatsu Ho and Haaku Ho). Also, the Kyokute Ho methods are only found within the Japanese tradition of Anma and not in any other art form. Each section allows you to work the body in a uniquely different way. These nine sections create various effects that assist in the achievement of the goals of Anma Therapy. During an Anma massage all nine areas are utilized which creates a very complete full body therapy.

I would like to explain about the secret family manuscript from the Yoshida-ryu titled: Yoshida-ryū Shinketsu Hō 吉田流鍼穴法 (Yoshida Style Acupoint Method). This secret manuscript (Kudensho 口伝書) explains/decodes their Kahi Shinketsu 家秘鍼穴 (Family Secret Acupoints) and explains their Keiraku Kogi 経絡考義 (thoughts on the meridians). Besides being one of the most important schools of Anma (Japanese massage) the Yoshida-ryu also has their own family styles of Shinkyū 鍼灸 (acupuncture and moxibustion).
